The 5 Fundamentals of Lightness

Five organizing principles that guide every training decision toward self-carriage.

  • Jaw Flexion

Relaxes the jaw, creating softness and freedom of the tongue for full body release

  • Lifting the withers

Restores horizontal balance, lightening the forehand and supporting the flow of impulsion.

  • Obedience to the leg

Develops calm, clear responsiveness and forward movement.

  • Giving Shape

Bends the horse for vertical balance of the withers creating suppleness and connection.

  • Neck Extension

Lengthens the topline and neck allowing the inside hind leg to step through supporting alignment and self-carriage.

Turn Feel into Deliberate Lightness

Every action has purpose, every response creates harmony — riding with awareness begins here.

Most riders don’t lack feel — they lack a way to use it deliberately. They move through sessions without a clear intention, unsure how to interpret resistance or how to respond in a way that actually helps their horse find balance and self-carriage.

The Five Fundamentals of Lightness give you a clear framework for understanding what your horse is communicating and restoring softness, alignment, and responsiveness. These five principles address the most common challenges riders encounter — loss of connection, bracing, crookedness, heaviness on the forehand, and lack of impulsion — providing a decision-making system you can rely on in every session from beginning to advanced training.

The Conscious Riding Loop shows you how to apply these principles moment by moment. It’s the practical process for observing, interpreting, and responding with clarity and intention, so that every action has purpose and every response builds harmony.

Together, the Five Fundamentals and the Conscious Riding Loop create Deliberate Lightness — a way of riding and training where you move with awareness, communicate clearly, and guide your horse toward true balance, self-carriage, and lasting connection.

The Conscious Riding Loop

Applying the 5 Fundamentals through the 6 steps of the Conscious Riding Loop, every session.

  • Visualize

See the result you want to achieve and clarify the quality you’re asking for ahead of time in your minds eye.

  • Clear, Conscious Cue

Separate your aids and communicate your intention through a precise, well-timed cue.

  • Observe

Watch & feel how your horse responds through their body, movement, and contact.

  • Interpret

Decide if the horse accomplished your intention or whether you encountered resistance.

  • Respond & Adjust

Apply the appropriate Fundamental according to which resistance you experienced.

  • Repeat What Works

Release, acknowledge, and repeat what creates lightness and balance until your intention is achieved.

Helping riders create Deliberate Lightness, connection, and harmony

I’m Celie. My work blends classical dressage with embodied feel and deep respect for how horses learn and experience the world. By listening and responding with timing and intention, balance and self-carriage emerge naturally. The Five Fundamentals of Lightness reflect this approach and shape my work with horses and riders at every stage.

What riders are saying:

In their own words

The days of struggling wth impulsion seem so long ago...

Kathy Schoettler

Before working with Celie I was exhausted after every ride trying to get my horse forward to the aids. It became so frustrating that I gave up riding my beautiful mare for a whole year. After learning Celie's methodology my horse understands me, goes happily forward and for the first time I feel confident and competent when I'm riding. It has become fun again!

It's amazing how far we've come from online training alone!

Sherri Dolan

I really enjoy Celie's online courses. I've taken other online courses before and I was not happy with any of them. However Celie has given me lots to work on and I love the methodical approach. My horse and I are progressing nicely even in advanced movements!

I have great rides on both my horses now!

Judy Greene

I highly recommend Celie's online courses. I read a lot and have thousands of dollars worth of lessons over the years, but still have gaps in my understanding that her methodical approach is clearly resolving!

My horse is straight, light and forward!

Carol Gullikson

Thank you Celie, for giving me a horse that I can truly enjoy riding. I want you to know that this would not have happened to me if it wasn't for you and this training. I want you to know my true appreciation!

Our Gypsy Vanners are so light!

Nilda & Thomas Moscow

We are the proud owners of two full brother Gypsy Vanners. When we purchased them they were out of training and very stiff. They are drafts and were heavy on the hand and terrible on the ground. Now they are light and versatile and we enjoy using them for dressage, driving and trail riding. Thanks Celie!
